Based on the popular children's books by renowned Canadian cartoonist Ben Wicks and daughter Susan Wicks, each half-hour episode of this series contains three seven-minute stories that unfold as if a parent were reading a book aloud. Illustrated by Ben Wicks, the series uses a "picture-mation" style over detailed background paintings incorporating the cartoonist's loose, stylized drawings.
In each episode, Katie and Orbie have to deal with "first-time experiences" such as losing a first tooth or riding a bike. Katie is an exuberant five-year-old, fast approaching her first days at school. She spends her time exploring and explaining the world to her friend from another planet ? the small, pink and inquisitive Orbie. The two friends learn about everyday life, with Katie finding much amusement in having to explain to Orbie the proper way of doing things on Earth. The show, although aimed at preschoolers, also appeals to early school children who take great delight in the fact that Orbie knows even less than they do about the world.
