Q. How do I install the Life With Derek Desktop?
A.Click on the Life With Derek Desktop theme.
- Choose “save” in the saving window choose “desktop” in the “save in” drop down box.
- Click “save”
- The file should now be saved to your desktop, double click the red and white “L” icon and choose “install”
- Now click “finish” that’s it!
Q. How do I remove the
- right-click on your desktop and choose "Properties"
- Click the "Desktop" tab.
- Choose another desktop from the "Background" list or choose “none” (at the top of the list).
To remove the desktop and delete it:
- Open the Life With Derek Desktop installer
- Click "Uninstall."

Q. How do I add objects to my desktop?
- Click the "Decorate" button.
- Click and drag objects from the Decorate window and drop them on your desktop wherever you like.
Q. How do I get rid of objects on my desktop?
- Make sure your "Decorate" window is up by clicking the "Decorate" button at the top of the screen.
- Drag the object you want to remove to the X in the top right corner of the screen.
- The item will turn transparent when you've got it in the right spot.
- Let go and it will disappear.
Q. How do I get rid of everything on my desktop?
A. Click the "Reset" button at the top of the screen. This cannot be undone.
Q. How do I change my internet connection type?
- Click the "Preferences" button at the top of the screen.
- Select "High-Speed" if you are using a cable modem or DSL.
- Select "Dial-up" if you use a dial-up connection.
- If you're not sure, check with your parents.
Q. How do I send a message from the Life With Derek desktop?
- Click on the "Message" button at the top of the screen.
- Type your message in the box.
- Click on "Encode."
- Click on "send." This opens up the "Message" page in the Life With Derek Fam Club on family.ca
- Enter your name and email address.
- Enter your friend's name and email address.
- Click "Submit" to send your message to your friend.
Q. I've been getting the same news for a few days. How can I fix that?
A. Click on "Reset" to force the Life With Derek desktop to download new news.
NOTE: Clicking reset will clear all of your decorations from your desktop. You will have to put things back after you hit "Reset."
Q. I can't install the Life With Derek desktop or Life With Derek installer says "Installation Complete!" but I don't see anything on my desktop. What's the matter?
A. Is your computer "locked?" You might need a parent/teacher to enter a password in order to let you install the Life With Derek Desktop. You need to:
- Be able to download files to your computer
- Have Active Desktop enabled
- Be able to change your wallpaper
- Have Windows 2000 or higher
- Have the latest Flash plug in (which can be downloaded here).
