Cougar Radio began over twenty-five years ago in the mid-1970s when a group of students with a love of music and an interest in broadcasting decided that Henry Roscoe High School needed a forum to communicate student issues. With the help of a faculty advisor, they gathered the equipment they needed - a turntable, an eight-track tape player, a few microphones, and a P. A. system. They set up shop in an unused utility closet in the school’s basement, and began broadcasting varsity sport scores and reports on student activities. Thus, Cougar Radio was born!

Since then, Cougar Radio has grown from the basement utility closet to a state-of-the-art broadcast studio. In the spirit of its founders, it has continued the tradition of communicating relevant issues to the student body of Henry Roscoe High School. Whether it’s reporting on pep rallies, student fundraisers, or waving the banner for the many Cougar sports teams, Cougar Radio has been a consistently reliable voice for the ol’ Blue and Gold. Over the years, Cougar Radio has been the proud winner of eight Golden Microphone Awards for excellence in student broadcasting.

Throughout its history, many former Cougar Radio DJ’s have gone on to successful careers in broadcast journalism, politics, law, and public administration, to name but a few. They no doubt owe much of their success to the work ethic and discipline they learned behind the controls of Cougar Radio. One former Cougar Radio DJ even went on to a very successful career right here at Henry Roscoe High School as the Head Cougar himself!
